Product Review: Garnier Micellar Oil-Infused Cleansing Water

For this blog’s first product review, we would be looking at Garnier Micellar Oil-Infused Cleansing Water. This product is a biphasic micellar water, with its oil phase floating on top of its water phase. This product claims that it is effective at removing even waterproof makeup while being gentle to the skin. This product contains Argan Oil (INCI Name: Argania spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil as its main emollient. Argan Oil is used in a lot of cosmetic products for its supposed skin and hair benefits.

Aside from Argan Oil, this product also contains Decyl Glucoside, a naturally-derived non ionic surfactant, that is significantly milder than your traditional anionic surfactants like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). This ingredient allows this product to remove all that dirt and makeup from your skin.

Now, let’s have a look at its ingredient list

INGREDIENTS:

Aqua/Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Isohexadecane, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Salicylate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, CI 60725 / Violet 2, Decyl Glucoside, Dipotassium Phosphate, Disodium EDTA, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Geraniol, Haematococcus Pluvialis Extract, Hexylene Glycol, Limonene, Linalool, Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Polyaminopropyl Biguanide, Potassium Phosphate, Sodium Chloride, Parfum / Fragrance

Let’s now group the ingredients based on their functions:

Solvents: Water, Hexylene Glycol

Emollients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Isohexadecane, Argan Kernel Oil

Surfactant: Decyl Glucoside

Preservative: Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Alcohol, Polyaminopropyl Biguanide

Chelating Agent: Disodium EDTA

Antioxidant: Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (these UV filters were used to prevent photooxidation of this product), Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, Haematococcus Pluvialis Extract

pH Adjuster: Potassium Phosphate, Dipotassium Phosphate

Fragrance: Parfum / Fragrance, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool

Colorant: CI 60725 / Violet 2

Stabilizing Agent: Sodium Chloride

The function of sodium chloride in this formulation is special, because this is the one that maintains the clear distinction between the oil phase and water phase of this product. Sodium chloride prevents the migration of some of the oil droplets into the water phase when the product is at rest.
